About Hammitt
Founded in 2010 in Los Angeles by Tony Drockton, Hammitt derives its name from a combination of the founder’s and his wife’s surnames. Drockton previously ran a shoe company and, after selling it, wanted to launch a new accessories venture inspired by the functional yet stylish bags he saw people carrying in Europe.
Hammitt’s first handbag was the Rico, a slim briefcase-style bag with custom hardware like an oversized leather zipper pull and detachable strap. Signifying the brand's focus on elegant functionality, the Rico featured both hand carry straps and a crossbody option.
Central to Hammitt’s brand vision is the idea of “luxe utility” - offering what Drockton describes as "high design and high function in one beautiful package." This spurs continual innovation in materials and silhouettes to create the perfect intersection of form and function.
While Hammitt has introduced more traditional shapes like totes and hobos over the years, the brand has become particularly known for modern silhouettes with unique hardware and textural elements. One standout detail is the use of Saffiano embossing on Italian calfskin leather for added durability and visual interest.
The Los Angeles Collection, anchored by iconic styles like the Grove Crossbody and the Robertson Flap Bag, represents Hammitt’s quintessential elevated casual aesthetic. Many feature the brand's signature palm leaf jacquard lining inspired by LA palm trees.
In recent years, Hammitt has focused on international expansion by tailoring products to regional tastes abroad while retaining brand identity. The company has also built an impressive celebrity following, seen on stars like Jennifer Lopez and Jessica Alba.
