Hermès HAC Bag Guide: Sizes 40, 50 & Beyond

Buy the HAC 40 if you want the classic tall shape in a size that can still work for a short trip. Buy the HAC 50 when you want true luggage and will carry it only short distances. Both are large, handle-only bags, so capacity is only useful if the loaded weight suits the way you travel.

HAC 40 is the practical starting point. It is wide enough for a laptop, documents, a sweater and travel essentials, but published examples range from 30 to 38 cm high and 19 to 25 cm deep, so even the shallower versions are much larger than a normal work tote. HAC 50 adds another 10 cm of nominal width and reaches about 40 to 41 cm high and 25 to 28 cm deep, which moves it firmly into weekender and luggage use.

Hermès describes the Haut à Courroies as its first bag. Created in the horse-travel era, its tall body held a saddle and riding boots; as automobiles replaced horses, the same construction became a travel bag. The name means “high belts” or “high straps,” a direct reference to the two long leather straps that run over the flap and fasten at the front.

The modern lineage runs through the Birkin. Jane Birkin had used an HAC 50, and the bag's roomy top-handle form helped inspire the lower, wider holdall Jean-Louis Dumas designed after meeting her on a Paris-to-London flight in 1984. The family resemblance is clear in the flap, paired straps, hasps, turn-lock and clochette, but the proportions change how the two bags work.

The size number is a nominal width in centimeters, not a complete specification. Public HAC 40 examples span 30 to 38 cm high and 19 to 25 cm deep, while public HAC 50 examples span 40 to 41 cm high and 25 to 28 cm deep. Different eras and special constructions account for much of that range, but the tall body remains the defining difference from the lower Birkin.

Historical HAC 28 and 32 bags and the larger 45, 55 and 60 sizes appear less consistently than the 40 and 50. The documented 45 and 60 examples above give a useful scale, while the cited HAC 55 lot publishes width and height but not depth. For any preowned bag, confirm width across the base, full height, depth, handle drop and empty weight.

HAC 40 is still a very large handbag, but it is the size most likely to leave the hotel. Its 40 cm width can take a laptop and documents, while the deep base leaves room for a small packing cube, sweater, bottle and pouch. The height is less convenient for ordinary desk use because small items settle at the bottom and the bag occupies substantial floor or passenger-seat space.

It works best for someone who travels by car, likes carrying a bag by hand or in the crook of the arm, and does not need quick one-handed access. The flap can be tucked inside and the straps left open, but the bag is most secure when the straps and turn-lock are fastened.

HAC 50 has enough volume for a weekend, but that capacity can work against you. A 50 cm-wide leather bag filled with shoes, a wash bag, clothing and electronics becomes awkward before it becomes full. The short handles keep the load close to your hand, with no shoulder strap to spread the weight.

Choose it for car travel, private travel, a luggage trolley or short carries between curb and room. It is less suited to a long airport connection, public transport or any trip where you expect to walk while holding it. HAC 55 and 60 magnify the same tradeoff and also demand substantial storage space at home.

There is no single useful HAC weight because size, leather, canvas panels, pockets and runway hardware all change it. The reliable buying point is simpler: a large HAC starts with more leather and hardware than a normal tote, then places the whole load on two short handles. Ask for the empty weight of the exact bag and test that amount at home before buying.

• For work: HAC 40 can hold a laptop, but it lacks a shoulder strap and built-in padded computer compartment.
• For flights: check the airline's current cabin-bag limits. HAC 50 dimensions can exceed a carrier's personal-item allowance even before the bag is packed.
• For road trips: both sizes work better because you carry them between the car and accommodation rather than across a terminal.
• For daily errands: the short handles and belted flap are slower than a shoulder bag or open tote.

Togo and Clemence give the large body a softer, grained surface; Fjord, Ardennes and other firmer vintage leathers can make the tall shape look more architectural. Barenia develops a visible patina, while canvas-and-leather combinations remove some visual bulk and can be easier to carry than an all-leather bag of the same size.

Material also changes price more than size alone. Cargo, Rock, Cosmos, Multipockets, Flag, Endless Road and other limited editions have extra pockets, mixed materials, graphics or runway details, so their auction prices should not be used as a benchmark for an ordinary Togo HAC. Crocodile belongs in a separate price comparison as well.

Hermès does not maintain a public U.S. product page with stable boutique prices for the classic travel HAC. Recent auction sales give a clearer dated picture: standard Togo HAC 40 examples have sold in the high four figures to mid-five figures, while limited editions and exotic leather can be several times higher. Condition, year, material and edition matter more than a simple 40-versus-50 rule.

These are sale results in their original currencies, not unsold asking prices and not current boutique quotes. The €8,820 Togo results show how ordinary leather HAC bags can sell below the most ambitious reseller asks; the $35,280 Cargo 40 and $60,480 Multipockets 50 show what happens when a scarce edition drives the comparison.

The classic travel HAC remains in the Hermès world, but it does not behave like a bag you can choose from a permanent online menu. Boutique availability is irregular, and special runway versions can appear without establishing a standing price or size range. Tell a sales associate whether you want a standard HAC 40, a larger travel size or a specific edition; those are very different searches.

Auction houses and major resellers offer the broader selection, especially for vintage HAC 45, 50, 55 and 60 bags. Search both “Haut à Courroies” and “HAC Birkin,” since sellers use both names. For online Hermès bags that do appear on regional sites, BagUSeek's restock alerts can notify you in seconds, but the travel HAC is more often a boutique, auction or resale search.

The shared name and hardware cause confusion, but these bags solve different problems. The travel HAC is tall hand luggage. The Birkin is a lower, wider handbag. HAC à Dos is a slim convertible backpack with one adjustable strap.

HAC 40 vs Birkin 40

Both are 40 cm wide, but the HAC uses more height and depth. That makes it better for bulky travel items and worse for seeing or reaching small objects at the bottom. Birkin 40 spreads the capacity horizontally, so it behaves more like a very large work bag. Choose by proportion and carry, not by the shared size number.

Travel HAC vs HAC à Dos

HAC à Dos borrows the crossed straps and turn-lock but changes almost everything else. The PM measures about 7.1 x 11 x 3.1 inches and the GM about 10.2 x 14.2 x 4.3 inches, with shoulder, crossbody and backpack carry. It is an essentials bag, while HAC 40 and 50 are top-handle travel bags. Unlike the travel HAC, it also has public U.S. pricing: in the listings we tracked in July 2026, the PM was $11,300 and the GM $13,000, with premium leathers higher.

• Confirm the stated size with actual width, height, depth and handle-drop measurements.
• Ask for the empty weight, especially for HAC 50 and all-leather or hardware-heavy editions.
• Inspect the base corners, piping, handle roots and handle glazing; a large bag puts stress on all four areas.
• Check both long straps for cracking, stretching, replacement work and uneven holes.
• Review the turn-lock, plates, feet, clochette, lock and keys, and confirm what accessories are included.
• Look inside for spills, odor, pen marks, powder residue and deformation caused by poor storage.
• Separate ordinary leather, exotic leather and limited editions before comparing prices.
• Add shipping, tax, duties and return costs to the final price, especially for a bag this large.

HAC 40 is the best choice for most buyers because it preserves the tall equestrian shape without crossing fully into oversized luggage. It can handle work or a short trip if you accept hand carry, slower access and a deep interior.

HAC 50 is the better choice when travel capacity and visual scale are the point. Buy it with a realistic plan for transport and storage, not because 50 sounds only slightly larger than 40; it is 25% wider and has substantially more volume. HAC 55 and 60 belong to the same luggage-first decision.

Choose a Birkin if you want the related closure in a lower everyday shape. Choose HAC à Dos if you need hands-free carry. The classic HAC earns its place when you want a tall hand-carried travel bag and are willing to organize the trip around it.
