Hermès Kelly Cut So Black Noir Box PVD Hardware Kelly Cut So Black in Noir Box with black PVD hardware. The So Black collection was Jean-Paul Gaultier's final major release as Hermès creative director, produced for Fall 2010. The concept is total monochrome: leather, hardware, lock, keys, stitching, and packaging are all rendered in black. No contrasting metal, no tonal shift, no visible seam between material and hardware. The bag absorbs light rather than reflecting it as separate components. The Kelly Cut is the evening clutch format of the Kelly family: elongated, flat, with a single flat top handle for hand carry. Box is Hermès's oldest calfskin, smooth with a semi-gloss surface that produces a mirror-like depth in black. The PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating on the hardware is a technology borrowed from the watch industry, producing a matte black finish that is darker and more durable than traditional plating. The contrast between the glossy Box surface and the matte PVD metalwork is the single tonal variation in the entire object. That tension between two blacks, one reflective and one absorptive, is what gives So Black pieces their visual gravity. The tournante, plaques, and all closure hardware are coated. Tonal black stitching. PVD hardware had a high failure rate during manufacturing, which constrained production volume beyond the already limited allocation. The Kelly Cut was one of several silhouettes produced in So Black alongside the Birkin 35, Kelly 32, and Kelly 35, but the Cut is the rarest format because fewer evening clutches were produced than structured bags. Box was chosen as the primary leather for So Black because its glossy surface creates the most dramatic interplay with the matte PVD hardware. The collection marked the end of Gaultier's tenure and is regarded as one of the most significant limited editions in Hermès history. Resale Insight: So Black pieces have consistently set auction records over the past decade. They are recognized instantly by collectors and trade in a category separate from standard Noir bags. The PVD hardware finish is no longer produced on standard leather bags, making the original 2010 So Black the definitive reference for the monochrome aesthetic. The Kelly Cut format is the least frequently seen So Black silhouette on the secondary market. Excellent condition on a 15-year-old Box piece with PVD hardware indicates attentive storage, as both Box and PVD show handling marks readily. 👜 JaneFinds Condition Guide 📦 Sell With JaneFinds
