Hermès Sac Himalaya Symbiose Rouge Vif Ostrich Porosus Crocodile Gold Hardware The Himalaya was the flagbag of Symbiose, the 1986 collection of twelve designs Marie-Pierre Bernard created as an outside designer for Hermès, her only work for the house and never reissued. Of the twelve, the Himalaya carried the collection's thesis furthest: a bag conceived to function equally as sculpture, its angular crocodile flap breaking asymmetrically across the body like a rock face, the silhouette readable as a peak. Period coverage treated it as the piece that blurred the line between handbag and object, and surviving examples are the collection's most documented. The construction collides four materials in the Symbiose manner: a Rouge Vif ostrich body, the quill follicles giving the red a granular depth, against a Vert Foncé Shiny Porosus Crocodile flap, handle, and tabs, with Noir Box Calf banding the top line and Bleu Doblis suede at the panels. The hexagonal flap closes on a Kelly-type gold turn-lock set at an angle, a deliberate misalignment that is original to the design, and the interior is lined in Rouge leather with a zip top closure. Gold hardware throughout. An S ○ (1989) stamp places this example within the collection's original production run, late in the line's brief life. The four-material saddle-stitched construction, the angled turn-lock, and the period circle stamp form an authentication fingerprint that has never been reproduced. Resale Insight:Symbiose flagship examples clear well into five figures through auction and specialist vintage channels, and the Himalaya commands the top of the collection's range because it is the silhouette with name recognition beyond Symbiose specialists. Supply is fixed to a production run that ended over three decades ago, exotic-material examples in excellent condition surface least often, and each sale removes a piece into long-hold collections.
