Khaite Large Lotus Tote in Black Leather Retails for $2,900.00. This large size is no longer in production. Please note: I have entered the medium’s measurements because it’s a difficult bag to measure and I couldn’t find the correct measurements online: Handle Drop: 9” Mine is in great condition. It has rarely been worn, and always stored in its dust bag. Khaite’s Lotus is a scarf-inspired tote designed to be incredibly lightweight, with a rounded base for stability. The Lotus manages to be simple and elegant while also being slouchy and bohemian. It is structural yet fluid. When you lift it, you’ll admire how beautifully the leather drapes. You’ll feel lucky you got it to lay like that. You might even feel hesitant to set it back down. What if you can’t get it to lay right again? Surely, it’s too delicate to let slump on the floor? I don’t want to ruin it. Of course, you logically know its form is a result of its design. Nonetheless, there’s a delicacy to the Lotus’s beauty that makes it feel ephemeral and fleeting - like the bloom of its namesake in Spring. So consider the design: the superior quality of the leather and its specific density and weight, the strong stitching exactingly placed so as to attach the leather sides in just such a way to the circular base, the length and location of the shoulder strap creating tension in just the right places, the inescapable pull of earth’s gravity on it all. An incredible amount of strategic planning and consistency of production went into making the Lotus appear effortless and easy. The Lotus is unlined - an intentional choice, I believe, serving to highlight the contrast between the smooth, polished, gleaming exterior and the dark, sensuous, velvety interior. There’s a balance of opposing elements in the Lotus. It is confident in its contrasts. It’s multi-faceted and that makes it intriguing. If I’m waxing too poetic here, I can guarantee you will notice the following: The leather is of exceptional quality. The craftsmanship exquisite. The details are subtle but striking. I hope I’ve convinced you that Catherine Holstein, the creative director of Khaite since its 2016 founding, is a creative visionary and the Lotus is a true piece of art worthy of a dissertation.
