Garden Party sizes: which fits your day?

The 36 is 6 cm wider, 5 cm taller and 5 cm deeper. Those extra centimeters matter when you add a water bottle or a laptop sleeve. If you carry only a phone, wallet, keys and a small pouch, try the 30 first: the 36 may leave you carrying more empty bag.

For a laptop, measure the device inside its sleeve and test it through the opening. A 13-inch screen size alone does not establish fit. The measurements above describe the exterior, the top narrows when fastened, and neither bag has a padded laptop compartment. Bring the items you intend to carry together.

Hermès lists both sizes for hand or shoulder carry. Short handles can be awkward over a coat, so test that separately from capacity. Height alone is a poor rule for choosing between them. Hermès 30 specifications and 36 specifications give the dimensions; handmade bags can vary slightly. What about the Mini, TPM and Voyage?

The Neo Garden 23 is a smaller related design measuring 23 × 16 × 10 cm. It is not the Garden Party Pockets vertical, a separate model with additional pockets. The Garden Party Voyage 49 is the much larger travel option: an official H Viking canvas example measures 49 × 36 × 25.3 cm.

Older resale listings may use Mini, TPM, PM or a numbered size inconsistently. Ask for width, height and depth rather than assuming that “TPM” means a discontinued 21 cm bag. For more detail on the everyday tote, see our Garden Party 36 guide.

Hermès Garden Party prices in 2026

These are the latest matching US official listings in our September 18 check. The dates show when each price was last observed in our records, not a promise that the bag is available today. US prices exclude sales tax.

For the standard versions shown, moving from the 30 to the 36 costs $300 in Officier canvas or $375 in Negonda leather. Moving from canvas to leather costs more: $1,475 for the 30 or $1,550 for the 36. Choose the construction you want before comparing sizes by price.

Printed textiles, extra pockets and other special versions have their own prices. A $3,600 Officier 36 and a printed canvas 36 should not be treated as the same item. Prices also differ by country; compare local tax, exchange rates and any import charges before deciding that an overseas purchase is cheaper.

Closure, handles and interior

The central Clou de Selle snap holds the two sides of the opening together. The side snaps let you narrow or expand the top. This makes access quick, but it leaves gaps: the standard Garden Party is not a zip-top tote. A zipped pouch can keep keys and smaller valuables together; a plain open organizer cannot secure the opening.

The flat rectangular base and two leather handles give the bag its tote shape. Canvas and Negonda versions can soften with use, so do not expect permanently rigid sides. Hermès describes Negonda as deeply grained calfskin that becomes more supple over time.

Interior features depend on the version. Our all-Negonda 30 listing specifies a chevron canvas lining and zipped interior pocket; some textile listings also specify a pocket, while others do not. Check the exact product description and an interior photograph instead of assuming all canvas bags are unlined or pocket-free.

Canvas, leather and colors

Officier and Militaire are textile options paired with leather handles and trim. H-patterned and printed canvases change the appearance again. All-Negonda bags have a grained leather body as well as leather handles. Country is another leather name found in older bags; it is not “Country canvas.”

Canvas makes the contrast between the body and leather trim more visible. The Trench/Rouge Sellier 30 at the top of this page has a pale body with darker red-brown trim; the Ardoise/Bleu Indigo 36 shown above uses darker shades. All-leather Noir gives a more uniform surface. Choose from photographs of the exact bag, since the material, lighting and wear affect how a color looks.

The Garden Party color catalog can help identify names and past combinations. A color in a catalog is not a current stock promise. On a preowned bag, inspect the corners, handles and light textile panels closely: stains and darkening may matter more than a seller’s broad condition grade.

The Garden Party story

Christie’s dates the Garden Party to 1964 and describes its origin as a bag for gardening tools. The wide opening, rectangular base and adjustable side snaps still explain its appeal as a tote. The current family includes simple canvas and leather versions as well as printed textiles and designs with extra pockets.

Garden Party, Picotin, Evelyne or Herbag?

Choose between these by opening, shape and carry, not just brand or starting price. The Picotin is a softer bucket bag with a narrower base and short handles. The Garden Party gives papers and larger rectangular items more room across the base.

The Evelyne is the option to compare if you want a shoulder or crossbody strap. The Garden Party’s standard short handles do not give you the same carry. For canvas with a flap and strap, look at the Herbag. Its main closure is a flap and Clou de Selle fastening; “Zip” refers to zipped features and does not mean a full zip across the main opening.

For other shapes, the discontinued Cabag appears on resale, while the Victoria II fourre-tout is worth comparing when a zip top matters. Check the specifications of the version being offered.

Buying a Garden Party new or preowned

Hermès sells the Garden Party online when stock is available. Use the site for a country that can deliver to your address. A listing on another country’s site does not make it shippable to you. In a boutique, ask for the size and material you want, but do not assume every store has one or can order your color.

On resale, compare the same size and construction with the retail prices above. Ask for photographs of all corners, the base, handles, opening and lining, plus the condition report and return terms. Check for cleaning, recoloring and repairs. A low price can reflect wear; a high asking price does not prove scarcity or a completed sale.

Materials and condition vary too much for a single resale-retention percentage to describe every Garden Party. Seller asking prices also exclude the commission or buyout margin an owner may pay. Care and storage

Hermès advises keeping leather away from prolonged heat, strong light, oil and water. If it gets wet, blot it promptly with a soft lint-free cloth. Avoid contact between pale panels and dark textiles that may transfer dye.

Store the bag with light support inside, in its dust cover, away from heat and direct sunlight. Do not overfill it with heavy or irregular objects. For staining or damaged handles, ask Hermès to assess the bag. Its leather-care guidance advises against commercial care products; routine household soap or conditioner is not a blanket recommendation for this bag.
